How Long Does a House Cleaning Take?

Realistic times by home size and service, and why the first visit always runs longest.

With one cleaner, a general clean takes roughly 1.5 to 2 hours for a studio, 2 to 3 hours for a two-bedroom, and 3 to 4 hours for a three-bedroom. Deep cleans take two to three times longer. First visits run longer than recurring ones, because the home starts from a higher baseline of buildup.

How long does a house cleaning take by home size?

These are single-cleaner estimates for a general clean. Two cleaners roughly halve the elapsed time; the total labour is similar.

  • Studio or one-bedroom: 1.5 to 2 hours
  • Two-bedroom: 2 to 3 hours
  • Three-bedroom: 3 to 4 hours
  • House up to 1,500 sq ft: 3 to 4.5 hours
  • House 1,500 to 2,500 sq ft: 4 to 6 hours

For a deep clean, multiply by two to three. For a move-out clean on an empty unit, expect four to eight hours depending on size, because cabinet interiors, the oven and the fridge are all in scope.

Why does the first clean take longer?

Two reasons, and only one of them is buildup.

The first is that no home has been maintained to a professional baseline before the first visit, so there is always removal work that will not exist next time. The second is that the cleaner does not yet know the home. Where things are kept, which surfaces need which product, what you want left alone entirely. That knowledge is worth about twenty minutes a visit once it exists, which is why we write it down after the first clean rather than relying on whoever shows up next time to remember.

What makes a clean run longer than estimated?

  • Clutter on surfaces. Every object moved and replaced is time not spent cleaning. This is the single largest variable and the one you control.
  • Bathroom count. Bathrooms are dense work in a small space. Three bathrooms in a small condo takes longer than one bathroom in a large house.
  • Time since the last clean. Past six months you are removing rather than maintaining, and removal needs dwell time.
  • Pets. Hair extraction from soft surfaces and edges adds a genuine pass.
  • Building access. In a Chicago high-rise, freight elevator waits and loading dock check-in can add half an hour before anyone touches a surface.

Does a bigger team mean a faster clean?

Faster in elapsed time, yes. Cheaper, no. Two cleaners for two hours is the same labour as one cleaner for four. With flat pricing the team size does not change your price, so it becomes a scheduling question rather than a cost one. If you need the home back by a specific hour, say so when booking.

Should you be suspicious of a very short estimate?

Yes. If someone quotes ninety minutes for a first-time whole-home clean of a two-bedroom, they are either planning to skip things or planning to go over and bill you for it. This is the practical reason flat pricing is worth more than a low hourly rate: the time estimate and the price stop being separate negotiations.

Common questions

How long does it take to clean a 2-bedroom apartment?

About 2 to 3 hours for a general clean with one cleaner, or 4 to 6 hours for a deep clean. A move-out clean on the same unit runs longer because cabinet interiors, the oven and the fridge are included.

Why do some companies quote 90 minutes and others quote 4 hours?

Almost always scope rather than speed. Ask both companies for their checklist and compare the number of line items before comparing the times.

Does having two cleaners cost more than one?

Not under flat pricing. Two cleaners for two hours is the same labour as one cleaner for four, so team size affects how quickly you get the home back, not the price.
